Parent Alert! Lazy Cakes
| DREAM News - Prevention Room |
Who doesn't love a good brownie? If you are one of those people who enjoys a nice chocolate break to combat that mid-afternoon slump, brownies are most appealing! However, these brownies are not your traditional brownie.
Lazy Cakes, which are rather visually appealing, appear to be single-serve, kid-friendly, gourmet brownies. But parents, beware, Lazy Cakes are not your typical brownie. Touted as having "relaxation baked in," Lazy Cakes contain a variety of herbal ingredients along with the caution, "recommended for adults only."
These brownies contain such ingredients as Valerian root extract, passionflower, and melatonin. Lazy Cakes have an adult sized dosage of melatonin, which, according to experts, is enough to cause seizures in young people.
So how can such a product be manufactured and available to kids and teens? Since herbal ingredients are not considered food products, they are not regulated by the FDA. Remember, just because a product is legal, does not mean it is safe!
