Community Outreach Specialist
Mississippi Underage Drinking Prevention Coalition of Madison and Rankin Counties (MUDPC)
The Community Outreach Specialist (COS) will share (with the Community Outreach Coordinator) the responsibility of implementing and tracking MUDPC’s community evidence-based outreach strategies for preventing underage drinking in Rankin County. The COS’s responsibilities will include providing direct services to MUDPC’s target population, community interaction, data collection and task management. The COS will also participate in program evaluation, contributing to the community strategic plan, and other duties as necessary. In addition, the COS will coordinate the youth activities. DREAM, Inc. serves as MUDPC’s lead agency and project manager and will provide project oversight. DREAM’s COS will assist in developing and maintaining the MUDPC coalition, both adult and youth. Other responsibilities of the Community Outreach Specialist may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Community Outreach, Program Implementation, Participant Support and Coalition Involvement.
Possible tasks to include: - Participate in carrying out MUDPC’s customized outreach strategy for program participants and in implementing steps in the SPF community strategic plan
- Deliver evidence-based programs and environmental approaches in target communities
- Attend and participate in coalition meetings
- Develop youth coalition to support MUDPC mission
- Coordinate youth activities and meetings
- Engage in ongoing training and education through attending workshops, conferences and Mississippi Department of Mental Health (DMH), Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (BADA)-sponsored events
- Represent MUDPC at meetings with participants, agencies and communities
- Contribute information to project newsletters, project fact sheets, and progress reports
- Build and maintain quality relationships with participants, technical assistance advisors, and community stakeholders
- Research and maintain up-to-date knowledge of target communities via the Internet, local papers, and site visits
- Collect data and participate in evaluation activities
- Complete all workshops/trainings required in order to become a Certified Prevention Specialist
- General Office Procedures.
Possible tasks to include: - Establish and maintain electronic and physical files
- Make/ implement recommendations for operational improvements
- Handle routine office responsibilities such as ordering supplies, etc.
Qualifications:
- Experience working with coalitions and community-level programs, especially in the Rankin County area.
- Strategic thinking and high level written and oral communication skills.
- Extremely well-organized with a dedication to detail and a respect for deadlines.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
- Experience in collecting data and participating in evaluation efforts.
- Absolute discretion when working with confidential information
- Commitment to submitting data timely and accurately.
- Comfortable making oral presentations, facilitating meetings, and delivering curriculum instruction.
- Comfortable working with youth
- Comfort, accuracy, and timeliness in submitting reports
- Demonstrated ability to work as a mutually supportive team member combined with ability to take independent initiative.
- Must be culturally competent and have experience working in multi-cultural environments.
Other Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a public health, substance abuse prevention or related field with at least five years’ experience working in community organizing or related activities. Master’s degree is desirable, but not required. Substance abuse prevention or public health certifications are a plus.
